Dr. Andrés Matoso, MD | Professor of Pathology, Urology, and Oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
Dr. Andrés Matoso, MD, is a Professor of Pathology, Urology, and Oncology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he directs the Urologic Pathology Division and the Genitourinary Pathology Fellowship Program. He leads one of the world’s largest urologic pathology consult services, reviewing over 5,000 cases annually. His research focuses on the molecular basis of urologic cancers, including bladder cancer genetics and prostate cancer grading. He has authored more than 180 peer-reviewed articles, contributions to the WHO classification of tumors, and the textbook Survival Guide to Prostate Pathology.
Ankur Sangoi, MD | Clinical Professor, Division of Genitourinary Pathology at Stanford University
Dr. Ankur Sangoi is currently Professor of pathology at Stanford University, focusing on genitourinary pathology. He also serves as the associate program director of the Stanford surgical pathology fellowship program. His prior experience as a community pathologist has helped tailor lectures/teaching style to a more general audience. His research interests are focused on diseases of the kidney, bladder, and testis. Dr. Sangoi has more than 180 peer-reviewed publications and is on editorial boards of several major surgical pathology journals.
Ting Zhao, MD | Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard Medical School
Dr. Ting Zhao completed her medical training at Xiangya School of Medicine, followed by postdoctoral research at Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of Michigan. She completed residency training in Anatomic Pathology and a Selective Surgical Pathology fellowship with a focus on Genitourinary Pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital and is currently a Molecular Genetic Pathology fellow at Mass General Brigham. Her research focuses on the molecular characterization of genitourinary tumors, including spatial transcriptomics, novel gene fusions, and rare genitourinary neoplasms. She has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed articles, including over 20 as first author. Her work has been recognized with several awards, including the International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) Stipend Award and Urologic Pathology Excellence Award.

João concluded the Master Degree in Medicine in 2013 (ICBAS, University of Porto) and the PhD in Pathology and Molecular Genetics in October 2021 (ICBAS, University of Porto). His PhD Thesis, entitled “Uncovering novel prognostic and predictive epigenetic biomarkers in malignant testicular germ cell tumors” (funded by FCT: SFRH/BD/132751/2017) received in addition the European Doctorate Title. João is currently a Pathologist at the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Porto (IPO Porto), obtaining board certification in March 2024. His main areas of interest (both in diagnostics and research) are Uropathology, Thoracic Pathology and Molecular Pathology. João has a particular interest in the better understanding of testicular germ cell tumors, in biomarkers, liquid biopsies and epigenetics. He has been actively involved in Biobanking activities and is currently the Coordinator of the Molecular Pathology Lab at the Department of Pathology, being responsible for the implementation and performance of DNA methylation and microRNA liquid biopsy testing in routine diagnostics, as well as NGS testing.
João is a Researcher at the Cancer Biology and Epigenetics Group, leading the line of research on testicular cancer, and an Assistant Professor at ICBAS – University of Porto since 2024, lecturing in Pathology (Master Degree in Medicine and Master Degree in Dental Medicine). João authored 179 articles in international peer-reviewed journals (74 first author, 14 senior author, h-index 30) and 11 book chapters (8 first author, 2 senior author). João is Supervisor of 6 PhD Thesis Dissertations and 3 Master Thesis Dissertations, and Co-supervisor of 1 PhD Thesis Dissertation and 6 Master Thesis Dissertations.
João is a Member of the Testis Cancer Guideline Panel of the European Association of Urology (EAU). He is also member of several associations related to Urology, Uropathology and Molecular Biology: EAU/YAU Penile and Testis Cancer Group, ESOU Working Group on Testicular / Penile Cancer, EAU Section of Uropathology (ESUP, board member), and MaGIC (Vice-Chair of the Young Investigator Group).
Iryna Samarska MD, PhD | Maastricht University, Maastricht
Iryna Samarska has been working as a pathologist in the Department of Pathology at MUMC+ since January 2019. Her main areas of interest are genitourinary pathology, liver pathology, pancreatic-biliary pathology and gastrointestinal pathology. She participates in multidisciplinary cancer conferences, including oncologic gastrointestinal, liver, pancreaticobiliary, genitourinary and neuroendocrine tumors. She also participates in the supervision of pathology residents and teaches medical students.
In 2002, Iryna Samarska completed her training in Medicine at the National Medical University in Kyiv, Ukraine. In Kyiv, she also conducted her first Ph.D. on the pharmacological treatment of urge incontinence. After defending the thesis, she did her second Ph.D. at the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Groningen. The second Ph.D. project was on post-operative vascular reactivity and related renal disease. In 2012, she completed the assessment procedure for non-European medical doctors. During that period, she also worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Anesthesiology, University of Groningen.
In 2013, she started training as a pathology resident in the department of MUMC+. In 2015-2016, she also had an internship with Prof. Dr. De Bruїne, Dr. Van Marion and Dr. Wouda (Viecuri, Venlo). In 2018, she did a 1-year fellowship in urogenital pathology and a scientific internship with Prof. Dr. J. Epstein, in the pathology department, at Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, USA). She attended daily peer review (surgical pathology) and peer review (gastrointestinal pathology) conferences.

In addition to patient care, Iryna Samarska is involved in urogenital research projects, hepatobiliary research and renal tumors research.
Iryna Samarska is a member of the expert group on urogenital pathology, the autopsy pathology work group of the Dutch Society for Pathology (NVVP) and the Dutch Liver Pathology panel.
Ming Zhao, MD | Ningbo Clinical Pathology Diagnosis Center, Zhejiang, China
Dr. Ming Zhao is a Chief Physician at the Ningbo Clinical Pathology Diagnostic Center, Ningbo, China. He is a senior urological pathologist with a subspecialty focus on the diagnosis and molecular biomarker research of molecularly defined renal cell carcinomas, as well as the diagnostic and clinicopathological investigation of mesenchymal tumors of the urinary system. Dr. Zhao serves as the Deputy Leader of the Urogenital Pathology Group of the Chinese Society of Pathology, affiliated with the Chinese Medical Association. He has published nearly 70 peer-reviewed English articles and serves on the editorial boards of several international journals, including Virchows Archiv and the International Journal of Surgical Pathology, and regularly acts as a peer reviewer for multiple international pathology journals. He contributed as a participating author to the fifth edition of the WHO Classification of Tumours of the Urinary and Male Genital Organs and is currently an editorial board member for the upcoming sixth edition.
Costantino Ricci MD, PhD | Pathology Unit, DIAP-Dipartimento Interaziendale di anatomia patologica di Bologna, Maggiore Hospital-AUSL Bologna, Bologna, Italy; Department of Biomedical and Neuromotor Sciences (DIBINEM), University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy.
Dr. Ricci earned his degree in Medicine and Surgery from Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome in 2013 and completed his residency in Surgical Pathology at the University of Bologna in 2019. In 2024, he received a PhD in Oncology, Hematology, and Pathology from the University of Bologna and obtained European Board Certification in Dermatopathology (ICDP-UEMS). His research focuses on dermatopathology and uropathology, with particular expertise in testicular tumors, immunohistochemistry, and transcription factors involved in germ cell tumor reprogramming. He has authored numerous publications in pathology and oncology journals and collaborates with leading national and international research groups. His academic accomplishments include the Italian National Scientific Qualification for Associate Professor, advanced specialization in melanocytic and non-melanocytic neoplastic and inflammatory skin pathology, and an appointment as Adjunct Professor at the University of Bologna.
Büşra Özbek, MD | Assistant Professor of Pathology at Kocaeli University, Türkiye
Dr. Büşra Özbek is an Assistant Professor of Pathology at Kocaeli University, Türkiye. She received her medical degree from Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, completed her pathology residency at Kocaeli University, and subsequently undertook a postdoctoral research fellowship in genitourinary pathology and prostate cancer research in the laboratory of Professor Angelo M. De Marzo at Johns Hopkins University.Her clinical and research interests include hematopathology, urologic pathology, dermatopathology, digital pathology, and artificial intelligence applications in pathology.
Dr. Özbek currently serves as the Residency Education Coordinator in the Department of Pathology at Kocaeli University and is a member of the Editorial Board of Current Pathology (Güncel Patoloji), the official journal of the Turkish Society of Pathology. Her academic interests focus on pathology education, digital innovation, and international research collaboration.
Kosuke Miyai, MD, PhD | Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, National Defense Medical College Hospital, Saitama, Japan
Dr. Kosuke Miyai, MD, PhD is Lecturer of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at National Defense Medical College (Japan). He graduated in 2006 and obtained his PhD in 2014 at National Defense Medical College. He is board certified in Pathology, in Cytopathology, and in Laboratory Medicine.
His research interest focuses on diagnostic pathology and molecular pathology, with specific emphasis on molecular mechanism of progression of testicular germ cell tumor, prostatic acinar adenocarcinoma, and upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma. Dr. Miyai is author of 80 original publications in peer-reviewed biomedical journals, and has contributed to International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting as a member of Dataset Authoring Committee of testicular germ cell tumors.
